Event Summary

LINE Corporation is developing an extremely diverse range of businesses, including advertising, finance, AI, and entertainment/content-related services, centered on LINE, a communication application used by 92 million people per month in Japan.

The communication application LINE has more than 176 million monthly active users in four major countries (Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia). LINE has become an essential social infrastructure for many people.

Currently, LINE operates a large-scale infrastructure with approximately 70,000 physical servers and user traffic in excess of 3 Tbps, and with the exception of CDN and some services, almost all services are built and operated on-premise. We build/maintain/manage our own infrastructure.

At this event, we will introduce the roles and actual work of the team of cloud platform engineers who support LINE's large-scale infrastructure.
Verda is the largest OpenStack-based private cloud in the world with 99,000 VMs, 45,000 Baremetal and over 7,600 hypervisors.
We will discuss our usual working style, current issues and initiatives with case studies.

Introduction of Speakers

Hirofumi Ichihara

Verda Network Development Team / Manger
After conducting research and development of configuration abstraction and automation of SDN controllers and network devices at a telecommunications company laboratory, he joined his current position at LINE Corporation in 2018.
Engaged in the development of virtual network technology for data center networks, and developed a private cloud infrastructure using SRv6 (IPv6 Segment Routing).
Currently, as manager of the network development team, he is responsible for the overall network development and operations related to the private cloud.

Hideki Yamada

Verda Reliability Engineering Team / Manager
He was involved in research and development related to virtualization and cloud computing at a major telecommunications company's research lab and participated in the development of OSS such as OpenStack/Ryu/Sheepdog.
He joined LINE in August 2019 with a desire to be involved in large-scale, real-world infrastructure used in real businesses.
Currently, in the SRE team of Verda, LINE's private cloud, he is in charge of Hypervisor monitoring, specification standardization, and automation of various tasks.

Wang Xiang

Verda Platform Development I Team
Prior to Line, Xiang spent 5 years in the R&D department of a multinational technology corporation in Canada,
focusing on researching and developing software technologies in the system software (compiler) domain.
Seeking new challenges, Xiang joined Line Corp. in April 2022 in Tokyo as an infrastructure engineer, responsible for building and operating Line’s private cloud platform “Verda” using OpenStack.

Pickel Christopher

Verda Kubernetes Platform Team / Manager
He is a developer and manager on Verda’s Kubernetes Platform team, which automates provisioning and management of Kubernetes clusters for server-side and machine-learning developers at LINE.
Prior to LINE, Chris worked for Google New York, Google Germany, and a Japanese middle school

Chung Jin Hong

Verda Product Management Team
Jinhong started off as a pre-sales consultant for a Kubernetes-based solutions company, and eventually transitioned to a product management role.
Jinhong joined the Verda Product Management team on December 2021, becoming responsible for Kubernetes and Cloud Native products on Verda, LINE’s private cloud.
